You can download Fortnite on the app store even without an invite, but you just can’t play it until Epic gives you the okay, or a friend gives you a code. Originally I thought that the game had shot to #1 only through invite downloads, but that isn’t the case. I'm not sure if that's Apple's doing or Epic's, though I did see some Epic folks sharing around the "#1 on iOS" news late last night. When you search for the game it’s classified as an “invite event,” which I’m guessing has something to do with its removal from the regular charts and the #1 spot. I’m wondering if it’s now not appearing on some lists because of its partially-released status, but it was there at one point.
While that debut placement wouldn’t normally be surprising, it’s important to remember that this isn’t a full release, it’s an invite-only event where only a select portion of those who signed up to play the iOS version have gotten invites.
